Kaye Olfindo Collection

October 16, 2010 @ 12:00 am | Categories fashion, press release

I’ve been blogging more about foreign designers and brands but that doesn’t mean I don’t adore local fashion designers. So let me take you closer to home and check out Kaye Olfindo’s works – a Filipina fashion designer who owns a ready-to-wear line, kstyled, that was launched August 2005.

Art to Wear 2010

“Fueled by the success of her airbrushed miniskirts, Kaye is collaborating once more with local artist Vernon Perez to produce one-of-a-kind dresses. Boasting of unique prints, each dress is a piece of wearable art, with templates drawn, cut, and airbrushed by hand. The fact that everything is done by hand means that no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.

Denim is used as the canvas as the fabric holds well against airbrushing and its weave doubles as a textural element in the designs, adding to the quirky feel of each dress. Silhouettes are kept simple to allow the airbrushed prints to stand out.

While the dresses in the collection are made of denim, other fabrics can be used to create pieces that can truly express one’s individuality.”

Satin et Lacet 2010 Collection

“Taking inspiration from the reels of film noir, the collection fuses the romantic elements of satin and lace with deep, dark plums and black. Silhouettes fit for a dainty princess are given a hard edge, transforming the look into one most becoming a princesse sombre. Pale gold and yellow lace lightens the outward impression of our femme fatale, but satin with a metallic sheen adds grit and mystique.”

Film: The Secret World of Haute Couture

October 14, 2010 @ 8:00 am | Categories fashion films

Ever wonder if there are any people who wear such unusual couture dresses? Actually, they do exist.

The Secret World of Haute Couture (2007)

The Secret World of Haute Couture is a BBC documentary that tackles about the fashion life of the rich and royals. Margy Kinmonth, an award winning director, takes a journey from Paris to New York and California to meet haute couture clients and the designers they treat like gods. Margy investigates why wealthy women are prepared to spend so much money on one dress. The film is fun because socialites like Daphne Guinness, Susan Gutfreund and Carroll Petrie show off selections of their wardrobes and give their thoughts on buying this form of art work. They even touch the coutures with much passion and desire as if they were golds and diamonds. These socialites are usually seated in the front rows of couture fashion shows and they can get to buy the clothes through exclusive appointments. Private shopping arrangements are limited for socialite club members only. When they do a closed-door shopping, the dresses are displayed without price tags. They say that club members are not supposed to be conscious with how much a couture costs even if it’s worth thousands of dollars.

After watching the documentary, I felt like these so-called club members are a bit overrated. They’ve been preoccupied with expensive couture just to show them off at social parties. Yes, overrated but envying at the same time. Because they can wear strange-looking designer clothes yet people worship them. Also, the film showed that real life socialites have personal contacts with Karl Lagerfeld and other famous designers.

The film is more on interviews and narrations but it didn’t bore me. Perhaps because I was interested on who wear coutures and what pleasure they get from it.

Tuxedo + Sneakers?

October 11, 2010 @ 12:00 am | Categories dear sosyalera

Hi Leyn,

I have been a silent lurker of your blog and I find your site.. amazingly beautiful & informative with the latest trend and what’s in & out of fashion. kakatuwa!

Need your savvy thought of wearing tux & sneakers at a strictly formal wedding (of his cousin). actually this is my hubby’s concern. and i want to hear your thought. He’s not really keen of all tux formality, and since he’s a guest. would it be ok? The wedding is set in Oz, this November. its around 4ish wedding. hubby stands 5′8″, medium built, moreno.

This is my 1st time to seek advice on site.. hehe.. nakakakaba pala. hahaha! I tried looking for this topic in your site but to no avail. Hope you can help us with our dilemma. Keep on blogging.

Lui

Dear Lui,

A sincere thank you for liking my blog. I appreciate it. Heehee. :>

First, you need to ask the couple if it’s okay to wear sneakers. If it’s a ’strictly formal’ event then they may want to maintain an all formal theme for their wedding including the guests. I don’t see anything wrong wearing tux and sneakers as long as your husband can pull it off. But it also depends on the type and color of the sneakers. Like Canvas or Suede material is better. The shoes should blend with the formal tuxedo plus trousers and should not stand out among the entire outfit. If you’re talking about lace-ups then it’s fine and doesn’t look baduy. Pero kung mukhang rubber shoes talaga then I think it’s not cool.

If you prefer casual shoes for the tux, they should at least look like any of these:
